Kyle Tata, Room Tone

The Fulcrum Press is pleased to announce Room Tone, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Kyle Tata.
In his studio, located adjacent to Fulcrum’s gallery, Tata cuts, paints, and bleaches out areas of his photographic negatives. The images are made entirely within the confines of the studio and gallery spaces, collapsing the distinction between production and display and creating a slippage of time and place. For the duration of the exhibition, Tata’s studio will be open and used as an additional gallery—the marks on the walls within the photographs mirror those on the actual walls of his studio, creating a doubling effect for viewers. As they experience the work within the setting that it was created, optic and haptic input begin to merge.
In addition to the photographs, Room Tone includes a series of works on paper that feature generated images of “artists’ studios” overlaid with graphite rubbings of the doors, floors, and walls of the gallery and studio. The rubbings directly tie these works to the site in which they were produced, conflating the tactile architectural surfaces with the smooth, digitized space of the studio images beneath.
The exhibition’s title refers to an audio term that describes the ambient recording of a specific location without any dialogue or intentionally-made sound, only the latent sonic qualities of the space. In our contemporary screen-driven environments, vision is continually separated from its relationship to physical space. Tata’s work operates as a kind of antidote, where touch and sight are more closely aligned. As Tata’s manipulations cause the photographic negatives to fall apart, the eventual works index an endless feedback loop between illusion and reality.
